MOVIE PRODUCTION

This week we talk about movie production. It reminds me of my experience when I was in university three or four years ago.  I had been studying at that university for more than 2 years when we had a week chance for the training on how to make a short video or a short movie. Actually, it was one of the units. we supposed to do in a normal semester, but we made it as an intensive course, so it took just a week.

I loved movies but I hadn’t any experience of how to produce a movie. I hadn’t known whoever who would take apart for a movie. I used to think that it was an easy job to make a movie or to speak in the front of a camera. I had never thought that it was difficult. But this experience changed my mind about the movie.

We were 30 students. We were taught about the movie in general and how to write a script. What that we had to do and how we might build a script for a movie. How we had to speak and how we had to act and to read the news in the front of the camera. It seems that it was very easy to talk in the front of the camera, but actually, it wasn’t.  I had never thought that it was so difficult. In those days I found that it was quite difficult.

Three days before we finished our activity we were asked to practice what we had learned. We were challenged by our tutor to make a short movie based on what we had learned. We were decided in some groups and we were asked to do some research and observation about our movie.

Because we were going to produce a short movie about social life then we went to some intersection where there we could found many people with different social problems. We then talked with some homeless people and beggar. We asked what we made them live like that, ho was their life and how could they get food or money. Based on these observations and conversations which we had with them, we then made and built a script for our movie.

It seems easy but actually, it was difficult because we had to combine many different ideas from different people and we had to put all of these ideas in short script. Here we were demanded how to make short script without losing its main message. After we finished it we had to apply it in a movie. It was not easy as we had thought because none of us had experienced to be an actor, so it took more times, that’s why sometimes we need to take more than three or four times for each scene.

In the end, we managed to do it. All of us were happy because we were able to make a short movie based on our own script. What we had thought was impossible became possible because each of us tries to give as much as we could. We were united by one idea which was fighting for the social problem. We tried to put aside own interest and forward the social problem.  

There are many things that I can learn from that activity. First, it isn’t easy to make and produce a new movie, it required a lot of things and efforts. We have to spend a lot of time for observation and to do some research and to do some interview as well. We need to decide what genre that we are going to produce. We need to think also about financial and salary for the film production team and the actor who will get involved in that project.

So, I won’t sock or surprise if there is a new movie with big cost because I have learned and known already about the fact behind movie production. It taught me as well how to appreciate every movie as an expensive artwork which has been produced with a lot of budgets and a lot of people.

That’s why I never regret to spend time and surely a lot of money for a movie at the cinema because that could be one way how to respect and appreciate those who work for the movie, especially to appreciate the efforts the put to make a movie. Therefore, I always try to avoid download a movie, because it isn’t a good way to respect those people who have been struggled and sacrificed everything for a movie.
